KARACHI — Uneasy calm returned to this Southern port city of Pakistan yesterday as the death toll from three-day carnage rose to 48 after eight more people including a 10-year old boy identified as Faizan succumbed to his injuries on late Monday night clashes.

The toll could rise in coming days expected as several of the injured admitted in hospitals across the city are in critical condition.

According to official figures at least 75 people were still in hospitals under treatment for gun shot wounds.

The presence of Rangers was more visible yesterday, something that was missing on the first two days, when majority of the deaths occurred. The law enforcement agencies also claimed to have arrested scores of men in connection with the riots and cases registered against them.

The government has beefed up the security forces by rushing in another 3,000 Rangers from interior Sindh.
